The Department of Biological Sciences is the largest and one of the most diverse on campus in terms of the research interests of its academic staff. This year Lonsdale's has started something called "Word of the Month." When Mr. Coy asked me a few weeks ago, to choose the word of the month for the last month, I thought it would be easy. Then the pressure hit me hard. A word came to mind quite quickly. However, it seemed a bit too predictable. The word was "Beginning", as in "every ending is a new beginning." But just like that, without having another thought, a second word came into play. And the long debate began, much like having two little L.J.’s talking non-stop in your head. Anyway, it resulted in my choosing the word “Ending.”

The Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada is a national non-profit organization comprised of volunteers, members, and management led by a board of directors. An expert medical advisory board, made up of top healthcare professionals in the field of colorectal cancer, provides counsel to the CCAC to ensure members are kept abreast of the latest medical advances in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The mandate of the CCAC is threefold: awareness, support, and advocacy. The CCAC carries out a wide variety of awareness and education events throughout the year to increase the profile of colorectal cancer in Canada and educate the public. We participate in health forums and conferences, distribute educational material, hold free information sessions, and produce public service announcements for television, radio and print. As a patient-based organization, we understand the needs of those diagnosed with colorectal cancer and their families.

The MS Society of Canada Scholarship Program, supported by Billy Talent and Friends, is a post-secondary scholarship program for teens and young adults in Canada who have MS or who have a parent with MS. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is proud to work with a network of specialized MS clinics across the province. Clinic services vary, but most offer a wide range of services, delivered by a multi-disciplinary health care team. These services may include: Expert diagnostic and treatment services for people with MS Clinical research, especially in the area of MS treatment options Educational and support programs for people with MS and their families and caregivers.

June 12, 2010 we held our initial Open House and official opening of our new space. We handed out special awards and long-term volunteer service awards and celebrated with a beautiful cake and wonderful friends.

The mission of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada is: To be a leader in finding a cure for multiple sclerosis and enabling people affected by MS to enhance their quality of life. Our two major programs provide hope for the future through the support of MS research into the cause, treatment and cure of the disease and hope for today through our many services that assist people with MS and their families. Since our founding in 1948, the core support of the MS Society has been from tens of thousands of dedicated individuals, companies and foundations in communities across Canada.
