The Chemainus library branch was established in 1949 and has had a number of different locations until moving to its present location in 1990. Chemainus is a tourist destination but keeps a small town, community driven atmosphere.

On July 30th, 1936, the Courtenay library became “UNION LIBRARY” with Headquarters at Nanaimo. Later in 1951 the name was changed to the present “Courtenay Branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library”. The library branch moved to its current location in 2001. The branch’s striking architecture has made it a popular downtown attraction.

Previously library service to Cortes Island was offered through Book Deposits. Books by Mail was also a much-valued service to Cortes Islanders before a library branch was established.

The library has been at its current location since 1988.
The Cumberland Branch library was first located in the old City Hall in 1947. Cumberland library briefly withdrew from the regional system in 1967, but renewed interest allowed for a new branch to open in 1975.
Established in 1967, the Gold River library branch first opened in the community hall and moved to its current location in 1993.

The library branch has been at its current location since 1994.
The Masset library branch joined the Vancouver Island Regional Library system in 1983, but has had community library service since the 1940’s.
The Nanaimo library branch was established in 1936; however the coal mining centre enjoyed library services since the 1860’s. In June 1961 the library moved to a new building on Fitzwilliam Street and in 1997, the Nanaimo Harbourfront Branch moved to its current location on Diana Krall Plaza off Commercial Street in Downtown Nanaimo.
The Parksville library branch was established in 1937 but had a history of library service prior to that in the form of a traveling library. The library has been at its current location since 2001.

Then 34 years later, in 1972, the library was located at the Echo Centre and has since undergone a major refurbishment and expansion with the official grand re-opening December 1, 2007.
