As Canada's leading medical research university, McGill has been at the helm of breakthroughs in areas such as as biomedical science, epigenetics, neuroscience and stem cells and regenerative medicine. Recent discoveries include the identification of genes that lead to breast cancer, memory loss, spina bifida and type-2 diabetes. Paving the way toward innovative methods of health science education is also one of the University’s cornerstones. By pioneering a curriculum of physicianship, McGill promotes both the professionalism and healer aspects of the physician. Through the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) – a teaching hospital network of five hospitals, including Montreal Children’s Hospital, Montreal General Hospital, Montreal Neurological Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital and the Montreal Chest Institute – students and faculty have direct access to patients and clinical situations. And with the creation of Global Health Programs McGill is identifying and promoting worldwide learning, research and clinical opportunities with the intent of improving the state of health and health care for all.
