Jean Baptiste Sewepagham School, Fox Lake
Jean Baptiste Sewepagham (JBS) School has students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, as well as a Primary Readiness program and an Academic Recovery Program for those that have left school but are still school aged and have decided that education should be a priority. Enrollment is about 500 students. Most students are in primary and junior high, however there are a number of high school graduates each year.
JBS is one of three schools in the Little Red River Cree Nation (the others being in John D'or Prairie and Garden River). JBS is the largest of these schools and works closely with a locally-appointed school board.
Over thirty teachers and more than thirty support staff (teaching assistants, secretary, librarian, and cooks) are employed and meet the needs of the students and school community. It is a close-knit working relationship and it is not rare to find a high school math teacher on the same committee as a primary school teacher. The school is managed by a full-time Principal and two Vice Principals and enjoys a very positive working relationship with the local school board.
The school has a full size gymnasium, a stage with excellent lighting and sound system, shop and home economic facilities, and boasts a 27-seat computer lab with up-to-date computer network. The gym and other facilities are frequently used by the community outside of school hours, and if you are interested in facilitating or participating in different activities there are many opportunities to do so and everyone is encouraged to take part.
