The good news is that rigorous clinical research shows that psychotherapy works, and that overall the benefits are demonstrably large. As a client, you can improve the likelihood of having a good outcome by finding a well trained professional, and one that you trust and feel safe with. Over the years I have worked hard to develop my assessment & treatment skills. I have a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Simon Fraser University. I have also worked in a number of professional settings, including forensic facilities, universities, hospital based treatment programs, and in private practice. The benefit of these experiences for you is having a treatment provider who is well educated and experienced. I also continue to put an emphasis on continued professional development. Also critically important is that I genuinely care about the people I work with and am not judgmental. What happens in treatment depends on what brings you in, and what you are looking for. For some concerns, my approach is more structured and skills based (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT). At other times, my approach is “dynamically” oriented, and focuses on changing current symptoms by working through longstanding interpersonal and emotional conflicts. In the first few sessions I work with people to understand the nature of their concern and together discuss how we might approach making things better.
